Watch the Wild Ski Runs That Crowned Freeride World Tour Winners in France

0 27

In Val Thorens, France, the Freeride World Tour convened again for the second time this season as skiers faced off on the Pointe de Thorens face.

It isn’t unusual for these events to deal with tricky weather conditions—the organizers can’t, after all, make the atmosphere do what they want it to. Such was the case on Monday. Tricky snow challenged the Freeride World Tour, which had to move the competition to Pointe de Thorens from Cime Carron, where they originally planned to hold the event.

Still, another constant remained true. Anyone who makes it to the Freeride World Tour is a highly adaptable skier. For these athletes, perfect powder isn’t a prerequisite to throw down, and throw down they did.

Check out the winning lines below, and hear from the skiers who came out on top.

Women’s Winner: Agostina Vietti

Agostina Vietti, of Argentina, is a rookie on the Freeride World Tour. But on Monday, she looked anything but, lacing a confident and high-speed line down the Pointe de Thorens. Freeride fans may have seen this coming. During the first outing on the Tour earlier this month, Vietti took 4th.

“My run felt amazing. I did exactly what I wanted to do. I skipped a few features, but the plan worked perfectly, and I’m really stoked,” she said after the event. “I wasn’t as stressed as I used to be at the start gate; I’m learning to manage that energy better. I’ve realized that nerves can actually be a source of strength, and they really help me perform.”

  • First: Agostina Vietti
  • Second: Sybille Blanjean
  • Third: Wynter McBride

Men’s Winner: Ben Richards

Ben Richards continued to find his groove on Monday, executing a flawless, high-speed run that catapulted him into first place. The upper section of his run included one of the finest marriages of freestyle and freeride seen on the Tour so far—Richards lofted a huge 360 before immediately launching off another cliff. He's now won both of the Freeride World Tour competitions so far this season.

“I’m so happy. I took inspiration from Toby and Fynn, who dropped first, and they really helped confirm my line choice. I’m incredibly thankful to them, and I can’t believe I won once again,” he said.
