Ore-Ida Announces Limited 'French Fry Skis' for Just $250

The phrase “French fry” is seared into the minds of skiers the world over.

Most of us heard it during ski school, or from a parent who taught us how to ski informally. “Pizza,” the refrain goes. Then, “French fry.” Each food goes with a corresponding ski formation, serving as fun, kid-friendly alternatives to saying “wedge” or “parallel.”

That learning lingo slots neatly into one of the most out-of-left-field winter sports collaborations we’ve seen in a long time: Ore-Ida, the frozen french fry makers, is now also selling limited-edition skis.

“Ore-Ida French Fry Skis bring Ore-Ida’s crinkle cut look to real ski gear and slope-ready performance, complete with bold ridges, a golden fry-inspired design, and a ketchup-red backdrop,” reads the product description.

If you French fry when you pizza, you're gonna have a bad time.

Ore-Ida

The French fry skis, which are remarkably cheap at $250, weren’t, of course, manufactured by Ore-Ida. When companies that don’t make skis get into snowsports, they typically rely on established gear manufacturers—transforming a potato plant into a ski plant wouldn’t be easy, after all.

In this case, Ore-Ida turned to Fischer skis, the Austrian outfit known for its freeride and racing lines. “Performance always comes first for us, but skiing is also about enjoyment and self-expression,” said Brian Landrigan, marketing director at Fischer Sports, of teaming up with Ore-Ida.

As for the exact model, the French fry skis are the Fischer Ranger, a 90mm underfoot all-mountain ski. They come in five lengths: 142cm, 152cm, 162cm, 172cm, and 182cm. They’ll be available on Amazon and select retailers in Oregon and Idaho on February 1.

Are the Ore-Ida French fry skis the hottest graphic of the year? It's debatable.

Ore-Ida

Before then, Ore-Ida is taking its crispy-looking skis to the X Games in Aspen, Colorado, between Friday, January 23, and Sunday, January 25. There, skiers can try a “French fry” on actual French fries.

We couldn't help but think of Thumper, the ski instructor from that classic episode of South Park, when we first heard about the Ore-Ida French fry skis.

In case you need a refresher:

The Ore-Ida skis join a few other noteworthy and surprising gear collaborations that arrived this winter.

Kim Kardashian’s brand SKIMS debuted its second partnership with The North Face in December. That same month, skis sold by the streetwear and skateboarding label Supreme went on sale. Völkl built those skis.
