Völkl Releases New 112mm-Underfoot Powder Ski
After releasing the new Revolt 101 last winter, Völkl is adding yet another ski to the Revolt family: an all-new powder freestyle shape. Where the 101 and 114 fall into the hard-charging directional freeride category, the new Revolt 112 is a much more freestyle-focused shape that should split the difference between the 121 and the 104 in the Revolt line. This came as a bit of surprise given how much a certain Völkl athlete has been teasing a prototype shape of what look to be a large powder ski.
Alongside the release of the new 112, the entire Revolt line gets a cosmetic update with some really sick graphics courtesy of Italian visual artist Emiliano Donaggio, who happens to the be father of Italian national team member, Olympic athlete, and Völkl athlete Leonardo Donaggio. “For me, there is nothing greater than seeing my art on the skis that my son–and the entire community–now ride, expressing their own passion in the process,” says the artist in a press release.

The other night at dinner with a few industry friends, we all lamented how confusing the current ski landscape has become from a product delineation standpoint. We came up with a laundry list of brands guilty of producing perhaps too many products–making it difficult for the skier to understand what the difference is. Völkl's Revolt line is perhaps one of the most egregious examples of that.
With now ten skis in the line that have little in common besides the fact they were produced with heavy input from Völkl's athlete team, it's becoming really hard to delineate what's what. There's directional chargers like the 114 and 101, surfy pow and all-mountain skis like the 121, 104, and the new 112, plus park skis like the 96, 90, and 84, and kid's skis like the 86 and 81. All the skis certainly serve a purpose for the brand and the athlete team, but perhaps some cosmetic delineation would make sense?
In fact, this new Revolt 112 looks nothing like anything else in the line! Upon first impression, it's twin rocker and extremely tapered construction looks a lot like one of my favorite skis from years past: the older-generation Atomic Bent Chetler. I haven't had a chance to test flex or another characteristics on snow yet but with a stated weight of 2000 grams and a look at the shape, I imagine these will be quite a bit softer and surfier than the Revolt 114.
According to a Völkl press release, these were built and designed with heavy input from team riders including Kye Petersen, Colter Hinchcliffe, Markus Eder, and Finn Bilous–some of the most playful skiers I've ever had the pleasure to watch ride. Additionally, Donaggio’s design for this ski depicts "the feelings of a big powder day from the inside out, including elements of adrenaline, the heart, and lungs."
Much like the rest of the Revolt line, the ski features a wood core, hybrid sidewall/cap construction and Völkl's 3D-radius sidecut technology, where the sidecut underfoot is a tighter radius than at the tip and tail. This gives the skis a more stable character when at lower edge angles (eg. going fast and straight), and more agile and hooky feel when laying them over to higher edge angles and pushing into turns (edge grip when it matters!).
