Out of the Ordinary: HEAD Skis' New Movie Is a Globe-Trotting Hit

0 23

HEAD Skis, for the most part, is known as a hard-charging brand that supports big mountain rippers and ski racers alike. These are the skiers who can bend a ski and, no matter how choppy the snow might get, maintain form.

Out of the Ordinary, the brand's new team film, mostly reaffirms that reputation. Jess Hotter and Hedvig Wessel, of Freeride World Tour fame, carve perfect lines on steep slopes. Xander Guldman proves, again, that his time on the junior freeride circuit paid off. Aksel Lund Svindal, the decorated ski racer and Olympic downhill medalist, even makes a brief cameo in Out of the Ordinary

Watch: Out of the Ordinary

In flashes, Out of the Ordinary captures how wide and deep the HEAD roster actually is.

Emil Granbom, who knows his way around a double cork or two, plays a leading role. A segment in the terrain park turns the cameras to Jesper Tjader, the enduring freestyle scene figure with a penchant for bending the laws of physics. A young crew of up-and-comers, spearheaded by Jonathan Rollins, Floyd Guy, and Stephen Lindsay-Ross, ensures the next generation is represented.

Rollins won iF3's Breakout Skier of the Year Award for his performance in Out of the Ordinary. The film was also nominated for film of the year.

All of this action is cut neatly into themed segments, with a narrator delivering meditations on topics near and dear to skiers' hearts, like hut trips and Japan. The footage is crisp, the slow-motion well-timed, and the editing tight. For that, you can thank the film’s director and producer, Jeff Thomas, a longtime ski filmmaker with credits on classics like Every Day Is a Saturday and MAGNETIC

All told, Out of the Ordinary is a testament to the team movie approach. This is a full-fledged flick that would be at home on the big screen, featuring the kind of aspirational skiing that gets the blood pumping. And right now, as ski resorts across the west press pause on their opening dates amid an enduring dry spell, it’s the kind of pick-me-up we could all use.
