Oregon, Washington enjoying some of the best ski conditions in the West
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Monday’s base snow depth sits at 109 inches at Timberline Lodge and 101 inches at Mt. Hood Meadows and the Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort. That’s more than twice the base depth currently seen at top ski resorts in California, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Wyoming and Utah.
Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort’s General Manager Greg Pack told KOIN 6 News that the “incredible” start to the snow season is bringing in winter sports enthusiasts from around the country.
“The conditions have been nothing short of amazing for skiing and riding,” Pack said. “With some of the best snow around, we’ve welcomed a noticeable increase in visitors from outside our usual region — something we’re thrilled to see as word spreads about the fantastic conditions at Mt. Hood Meadows.”
Washington is also enjoying more than 100 inches of snow on some mountain slopes. Oregon State University Climatologist Larry O'Neill told KOIN 6 News that, according to the latest SNOTEL measurements, the Oregon and Washington Cascades indeed have the deepest snow depths in the western U.S. However, rain, ice and snow have hardened the region’s snowpack in recent weeks.
Current weather predictions for Mt. Hood show clear sunny skies into Wednesday. More fresh powder is possible on Mt. Hood toward the weekend.
“The deep, heavy snowfall has built a substantial base that sets us up for an exceptional season ahead,” Pack said. “We’re excited for what’s shaping up to be an epic year on the mountain.”
