Youth Participate in Ski Contest to Promote ‘Peace and Friendship’

Bamiyan youths took part in Peace and Friendship Cup ski challenges at the Shahid Mazari slope in the Bamiyan province on Friday to promote peace and friendship.

The event was organized by the Eagle Sports Club and the Sports Directorate of Bamiyan province, calling to world to unit with Afghanistan to end violence and promote peace.

Afzal Noori, the head of the Eagle Sport club said that more than 60 athletes including eight women had participated in the event in three categories. Zahra Noori won the contest in the women’s section, Mujtaba in the youth category, and Mohammad Amin in the teenage section, Ariana News reported.  

The event was welcomed by hundreds of spectators in spite of the icy weather on the slopes of Baba Mountain near Bamiyan city.

The participants admired the competition but the lack of suitable facilities and equipment such as ski lifts were a challenge for some participants.

Competitors said that the problems are repeatedly reported to the government officials, so far no task is taken to develop skiing sports in the country.

Sayed Ishaq Hashemi, the director of physical education and sports in Bamiyan, confirmed the lack of standard facilities and equipment in the province.

He asked International Ski Federation to assist and increase their collaboration to promote ski sport in Bamiyan.
