Former coach Bertrand Charest released from prison pending appeal

Former ski coach Bertrand Charest, convicted in June 2017 of sex-related charges against former athletes and sentenced to 12 years, has been released from prison pending his appeal.
On March 13, Charest appeared before Quebec Court of Appeal judge Martin Vauclair, arguing there had been a “significant change in circumstances” in his case — that the Crown conceded that 20 of the 37 counts he was convicted of should be thrown out.
He argued the Crown’s concession should have an impact on the length of his sentence.
Judge Vauclair granted him the release, pointing out that he poses no risk, but the judge did impose a number of conditions, including the provision that Charest cannot be alone with a minor.
