Poor shooting dooms Cal in loss to Washington, its 9th defeat in past 10 games

The Cal men’s basketball team couldn’t shoot straight Saturday night, and so it lost 62-51 at Washington.

The Bears (8-17, 3-15 Pac-12) shot 27% from the field, a mere 18% from 3-point range (3-for-17), and hit only 60% at the foul line, where they missed 10 shots, almost as many as Washington took. The result was their ninth defeat in their past 10 games.

Guard Matt Bradley scored 13 points, leading Cal in scoring for the eighth game in a row, but he missed 13 of 16 shots from the field and all of his four 3-point attempts. Teammate Grant Anticevich missed 11 of his 15 tries.

Quade Green scored 17 and Jamal Bey added 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Washington (5-17, 4-13).

Anticevich had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks. The 6-foot-8 senior from Australia also missed his three 3-point tries and his one shot from the foul line.

Junior forward Andre Kelly scored 12 points for Cal.

Cal has three games left, including Thursday, when Oregon State visits Berkeley.

Santa Clara 86, Pepperdine 82: Josip Vrankic had 26 points and Jalen Williams added 17 as the host Broncos edged the Waves. Santa Clara (10-6, 4-4 WCC), which had lost four in a row at home, scored 52 second-half points. Colbey Ross had 26 points and six assists for Pepperdine (10-9, 6-4).

Arizona 81, #17 USC 72: James Akinjo scored 20 for the visiting Wildcats (15-8, 9-8 Pac-12), who halted a seven-game winning streak by the Pac-12-leading Trojans (18-4, 12-3). “It showed we’re a good team and can beat anybody right now,” said Akinjo, The Chronicle’s high school player of the year in 2018 while at Salesian-Richmond.
