A RUGBY team that suffered a record 240-0 defeat has pulled out of the league over safety fears for its “wimpy” players.

South Leicester RFC chiefs made the decision after conceding 100-plus points in all but one game this season.

The team had just suffered a record 240-0 defeat and conceding 100-plus points in all but one game this season

It blamed “the lack of playing strength” after all the first team quit following relegation from National League Two last season.

A main sponsor also pulled out, meaning bosses could not afford to pay reserve teamers.

A fan named Craig said: “Brutally speaking, a lot of the players they have now are young lads and are just too wimpy.”

Results this season in the Midlands Premier League include 124-11, 120-0 and 127-7 defeats.

They have not played since the 240-0 drubbing by Bromsgrove in mid-October — the largest defeat of any rugby team in Britain.

A statement on the club’s website said: “This decision has not been taken lightly but as results have shown the lack of suitable playing strength and with the shortage of front row, the club must think of player’s safety and their wellbeing.

“The club will seek to re-enter the Midlands Leagues for the season 2020/21.”
