Cambridge University Boat Club is delighted to share that our Chair, Annamarie Phelps CBE OLY, has been elected Vice President of World Rowing, following the World Rowing Ordinary Congress held in Shanghai last week.

Phelps learnt to row at St John’s College and raced for Blondie (Cambridge Women’s Reserves) in 1987, beating Osiris (Oxford Women’s Reserves) by 12 seconds. Following this success with CUWBC, she went on to represent Great Britain at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and five World Championships, winning gold at Račice in 1993. Additionally, she held the world indoor record for lightweight women between 1992 and 1994.

She has remained actively involved in Cambridge rowing and in the wider rowing community, both as Chair of CUWBC and as Chairman of British Rowing. She is a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta and was awarded the CBE for services to rowing in 2015.

Phelps also served as the President of European Rowing, Vice-Chair of the British Olympic Association, Executive Committee Member & Chair of the Sustainability Commission on the European Olympic Committee, and UK Secretariat of the International Working Group for Women & Sport. She also previously served as World Rowing’s Commonwealth Coordinator, Chair of the British Horseracing Authority and the Chair of the Cycling Independent Review.

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to Annamarie on this exciting and well-deserved appointment.
