Tideway Triumph: Cambridge claims fourth clean sweep in Club history with Boat Race 2025 wins
It was a glorious weekend for the Light Blues, who claimed the fourth Boat Race ‘clean sweep’ in Club history. Thousands lined the banks along The Championship Course as Cambridge took wins in the Men’s and Women’s Boat Races, the Men’s and Women’s Reserve Races, and the Men’s and Women’s Lightweight Races, following on from clean sweeps in 1993, 2018, and 2023.
The 79th Women’s Boat Race started in dramatic fashion with a clash, causing the first restart since 2012. The race was stopped in the second minute by Umpire Matthew Pinsent after Oxford steered into Cambridge’s water, causing the clash. Cambridge were given a third of a length advance on the restart. Both crews restarted well, but Cambridge’s composure and solid race rhythm proved too much for Oxford, with Cambridge winning by 2 and a half lengths, extending to eight victories in a row.
Blondie and Goldie, the Men’s and Women’s Reserve crews, then saw wins over their counterparts Osiris and Isis. Both Cambridge crews delivered impressive performances, with Blondie reclaiming their title by a margin of 4 lengths and Goldie making it three victories a row winning by 4 and a half lengths.
The start of the 170th Men’s Boat Race was delayed due to debris in the water, but the delay did nothing to derail Cambridge’s composure. Despite close racing in the first minutes of the race, Cambridge executed a near-perfect race, winning a decisive 5 and a half lengths and 17 seconds ahead, and making it six out of the last seven victories for the Men.
Men’s President Luca Ferraro said to BBC One: “It’s been a great weekend for Cambridge. Something really special is happening out of our boathouse. I am just so proud of all of our teams. It’s such a great place to be.”
Said Claire Collins, “This is so cool, it’s really an incredible honour to share this with the whole Club.”
