In Memoriam: Nick Tollemache (B. 1962)
The Club is sad to inform its members of the recent death of Nick Tollemache, who achieved his Blue in 1962.
Nick died peacefully in Los Angeles on Thursday 28th November, aged 83. Much loved by his wife, Linde, and his three brothers. He will be much-missed by his nephews and nieces and all his family. A memorial service will be held in Helmingham Church at a later date.
Tollemache (Trinity) came to Cambridge from Eton, where he rowed with fellow Blue and 1963 President James Waldegrave. Nick (rowing the 5 seat) and James won the Schools Head in 1959, and beat Trinity 1st & 3rd in the Ladies Plate at Henley that year, with Nick and Toby Tennant winning the School Pulling (pairs).
In 1962, during the 108th Boat Race followed in the Umpires’ Launch by Princess Margaret, Tollemache rowed at 7 defeating Oxford by 5 lengths in a time of 19 minutes 46 seconds, the slowest winning time since the 1954 Race. It was Cambridge’s largest winning margin since 1955. Princess Margaret said of the Race, ‘We got drenched but it was worth it!’
