CUBC takes on London Met Regatta

In one of their key tune-ups for Henley Royal Regatta, a number of CUBC crews took to the waters at Dorney Lake to seek both good racing and pre-qualifying for Henley.

The CUBC highlight for the weekend was a win in Championship 8s for the Men’s Blue Boat/Goldie composite, but solid results and racing were shown by every CUBC crew.

Women’s Championship Single Scull: Megan Lee

Preparing for her return to the USA, where she will then prepare for the Remenham Challenge Cup as part of a USA 2028 pathways crew, Megan has been training in the 1x and the Met Regatta was her final hitout in the scull.

Her time trial put her in the A-Final, where she overcame a slow first 1000 to move through to finish 6th overall.

The lightweight crew had a solid performance in their time trial, with their time placing them into the C Final where they led through the 1000m but were overtaken by a solid Thames RC crew who took 1st in the C Final with CUBC 3 seconds behind.

Open Academic 4+: b) Tom Heppel, 2) Garrett Overholser, 3) William Wauchope, str) Cameron Mackenzie, cox) James Trotman

Looking to pre-qualify for the Prince Albert at Henley, the 4+ set a time placing them 4th in the time trial, and overturned that placing, leading to the 1000m and finishing 2nd to a University of London crew who they will meet in future racing, also winning Academic 4s in a great race.

Open Championship 8+: Joe Travis, Noam Mouelle, Dane Halkiw, Gus John, Seb Benzecry, Martin Amethier, Luke Beever, Matt Edge, cox) Jake Intrater

Bringing together a successful BUCS – winning Champ 4- and the silver medal BUCS Champ 4+, CUBC’s crew was the fastest crew in the time trial after having being upgraded from Academic to Champ 8s and were ready for the A-Final. They were never headed in their final, winning by just over 3 seconds, a lead which they maintained from the 1000m to the finish line.

2024 Blue Thomas Marsh and 2024 Lightweight Harry Fieldhouse, along with 2024 triallist Janik Schuttler, raced in the LMBC 8+ which placed 6th in the B-Final.

Women’s Championship 8+: Molly Foxell, Gemma King, Jo Matthews, Katy Hempson, Carys Earl, Carina Graf, Jenna Armstrong, Clare Hole, cox) Hannah Murphy

After a frustrating time trial in which the crew narrowly missed the A – Final, the Women’s 8 set out to dominate their B Final, and did so. Having drawn clear by the 500m, they maintained their lead through the 1000 and 1500, and stepped out to win by over 6 seconds.
