2024 World Rowing Cup Series Concludes

0 8

After a day packed with finals in the 19 Olympic and Paralympic boat classes, the 2024 World Rowing Cup series came to an end in Poznan, Poland on Sunday with the 2024 World Rowing Cup III.

The Netherlands ended the three-regatta series as overall winners, picking up a total of 143 points including 15 from Poznan. That was enough to push Great Britain into second place, with 138 points, including 20 in Poznan.

Dutch crews won five individual World Rowing Cup trophies, with four going to Great Britain and the remaining five spread out among Australia, Germany, Italy, Norway and Switzerland.

Australia topped the medal table at the final showdown in Poznan before the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, winning six gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes. New Zealand picked up four golds and two bronzes.

Australian wins included both men’s and women’s eights, the women’s single sculls by an impressive Tara Rigney, the women’s double sculls and women’s pair, and PR3 mixed double sculls. The latter victory, for Nikki Ayers and Jed Altschwager, makes Australia clear favourites to be the first-ever Paralympic champions in this boat class later in the year.

New Zealand won both men’s and women’s fours, the lightweight women’s double sculls, and men’s singles. World bronze medallist Tom Mackintosh emerged as the victor in the latter event after a good race against Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Damir Martin, and the ever-dangerous Dane Sverri Nielsen.

Hosts Poland won the men’s quadruple sculls in style, while Ireland looked dangerous in taking the men’s double sculls win – with reigning Olympic champions France pushed into fifth place.

Great Britain once again dominated the Paralympic events, extending their winning streaks in the PR2 mixed double sculls and PR3 mixed coxed four. Benjamin Pritchard won his first-ever gold medal in the PR1 men’s single sculls, while Sam Murray and Annie Caddick added PR3 mixed double sculls silver.

Crews who have qualified for Paris now turn their attention to the final block of training ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
