Races to Watch: May 3-5
USRowing Southwest and Central Youth Championships: The USRowing Youth Series kicks off this weekend with the first two of six regional championships. In addition to naming regional champions, these regattas will also award qualifying spots for the USRowing Youth National Championship, America’s premier youth rowing event. Over 1,700 athletes from 33 clubs will compete at the Southwest Youth Championships, held on California’s Lake Natoma. On the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City’s Boathouse District, the Central Youth Championships will feature more than 700 athletes competing across nearly 50 events. USRowing youth events will be live streamed on Overnght.
Philadelphia City Championships: 550 crews from 82 teams will compete across 48 events at the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association City Championships this weekend. Additionally, qualifications spots will be on the line for select events at the USRowing Youth National Championships and the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) Regatta. The events serves in many ways as the culmination of the Manny Flick-Horvat series of races where four teams were named series points winners: LaSalle College High School (men’s sweep), Merion Mercy Academy (women’s sweep), Malvern Preparatory School (men’s sculling), and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (women’s sculling).

Windermere Cup at Opening Day: The University of Washington men and women will take on crews from the Italian National Team and University of Wisconsin in the 38th annual Windermere Cup, scheduled for this Saturday, May 4, on Seattle’s Montlake Cut. Billed as Seattle’s greatest annual, free sporting event, the regatta features 23 races and is held in conjunction with the Seattle Yacht Club’s Opening Day parade, signaling the beginning of boating season. The Huskies have traditionally invited one international crew and one fellow domestic, collegiate crew, and this year is no different. The Italian crews are comprised of athletes who competed at the World Championships at the senior, under-23 and/or junior level. The matchup of the two UW’s provides a sneak peek at a future conference rivalry, as Washington joins the Big Ten beginning next year. Not only that, but the race is a personal one for Husky head women’s coach, Yaz Farooq, who is a Wisco alum herself. “Of course it’s my dream to have the two ‘UW’s’ meet up on Montlake,” she said earlier this week. Results will be posted live.
