National Team and CRI coach says he was harassed because of his race at Junior World Championship
While coaching the US women at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Paris last summer, Skye Elliott, Varsity Girls’ Head Coach at Community Rowing Inc, says he was harassed by security staff because of his race.
A letter published by CRI, and supported by USRowing, outlines the events from the coach’s perspective and claims that World Rowing not only failed to respond appropriately but has even accused the coach of provoking and abusing the staff, which he denies. Elliot was not identified in the original statements but was in a story by WBZ TV in Boston.
Elliot said, in a statement to WBZ TV, “It is very distressing to be treated as if you don’t belong. It is difficult to be reminded that no matter how hard you work to achieve your goals, there will be people who may view you differently than your colleagues.”
CRI has made a series of requests of World Rowing, stating, “The investigation, as World Rowing determined it, was not only incomplete, but it impugned a member of our coaching staff in writing. We do not accept the perpetuation of systemic bias nor will allow small moments like this one to pass by.”
