Aussie U21s outlast Kiwis on day one of Trans-Tasman Regatta

0 20

Australia has made a strong start in the Trans-Tasman U21 Regatta at Lake Karapiro in New Zealand, taking out both the Women’s and Men’s Eights in a gruelling head-to-head 5km showdown against the Kiwis.

The Australians had spent a week in Canberra prior to departure to get accustomed to the frigid conditions likely to be on offer in Aotearoa. It proved to be a good move on day one at the North Island lake.

This was a test of pure endurance and the ability to maintain focus and technique under fatigue. It was also a chance for coxswains to showcase their navigation skills along the duration of the course.

Both Australian crews made strong starts to establish an early lead before taking control of the race and closing out victories over the home rowers.

Athletes will now begin preparing for racing on Friday in the Fours, Quads and Mixed Double.
