Don Rowing Club is Postponing the Start of Rowing

0 6

Friday afternoon, the Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced a tightening of restrictions across the province in an effort to further limit mobility and slow the spread of COVID-19. Prior to the announcement we were in the final stages of approval with a plan to start rowing in limited numbers (5 at a time) in single sculls under cold water rules. Unfortunately, the new restrictions remove our ability to do this and we must remain closed for the time being: these restrictions are expected to be in effect until May 20, 2021. The bulletin below from Row Ontario summarizes the effect of the new restrictions on rowing. We will continue to train virtually as we did during our winter program. Details will follow.

Important Update COVID-19 Regulations – In effect April 17, 2021

Row Ontario has been able to access and review the amendments to the Regulations governing what is permitted to be open during this current period of Shutdown in Ontario.

Previously there was a stand-alone clause that permitted Boating Clubs to be open, that has been removed effective 12:01 am April 17th, 2021. Therefore, all boating clubs should be closed. The removal of Boating clubs from the list of organizations permitted to be open is clear direction within the provincial Regulations.

Additionally, the Regulations, while allowing commercial marinas to be open to work on vessels, clearly state that “person who operates the marina shall not permit it to be used for recreational boating purposes”. The combination of clauses makes it unquestionable that there is to be no recreational boating in Ontario during this period of time.

Under the provincial Regulations it is clear all rowing organizations in Ontario should be closed.

We will continue to monitor the legal updates and ensure you are kept up to date if there are any changes. There will also be an opportunity to ask any questions on COVID Regulations at the Town Hall this coming Wednesday.

Thanks again for your ongoing patience and leadership as we navigate these unusual times.

Stay Safe

Yours in Rowing
