As Vice-President, Mr Coates returns to the IOC Executive Board, which consists of the IOC President, four Vice-Presidents and ten other elected members.

RA President, and 1996 Olympic Games silver medallist, Rob Scott, joined with many Australian Olympic sports in congratulating Mr Coates on his election.

“On behalf of the rowing community in Australia, we congratulate John on this prestigious appointment.  We at Rowing Australia know first-hand the contribution John has made to leadership in sport administration on a global stage and his important role in the Olympic community. He is also a strong advocate for athletes and this extends to supporting athletes with their transition to life after competitive sport.”

Mr Coates is also Chair of the IOC Legal Affairs Commission and Chair of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Coordination Commission.
