Statement regarding current Australian bushfires  

RA office in Canberra to remain closed; National Training Centres to relocate temporarily to North Tasmania  

As the community will already be aware, Australia is currently being ravaged by one of the worst bushfire seasons on record.  

Due to these circumstances, Rowing Australia today announced that its Head Office in Canberra will not reopen on 6 January 2020. There is a heavy smoke haze that is impacting the city and in line with this the office will remain closed until further notice with staff working from home.  

In addition to the above, the organisation has also made the decision to temporarily relocate the athletes and staff of the Men’s and Women’s National Training centres to Northern Tasmania. The  Hancock Prospecting Women’s NTC will relocate to train in Launceston on the Tamar River, while the Reinhold Batschi Men’s NTC will relocate to Lake Barrington.  

Rowing Australia CEO, Ian Robson said: “The health and wellbeing of the RA staff and athletes is paramount to our organisation and that is why, at this difficult time, we have made the decision to not reopen the RA offices and to also relocate the athletes so that they’re able to train and prepare for National Selection Trials and Tokyo 2020.  

“We are extremely grateful to all at Rowing Tasmania, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport and the wider rowing community who have helped us during this unprecedented time. The thoughts of all of the Rowing Australia staff and our athletes are with those impacted and fighting these devastating bushfires.”
