CUBC at 2019 World Rowing Championships
3 CUBC alumni and 1 current student represent both their countries and CUBC this week at the World Rowing Championships in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria. 2019 President Dara Alizadeh (Hughes Hall/Bermuda) and 2019 Blue Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk (Peterhouse/Poland) are racing in the 1x, whilst Patrick Eble (Hughes Hall/USA) and Henry Fieldman (Homerton/GB) face off in the 8+.
Racing started on Sunday evening with heats of the single. In his first international regatta in the scull, Dara raced strongly but was tailed off to 6th in his heat and would have to proceed through the repechage. Natan’s race was a strongly contested on, which saw him come through the 1000m in 3rd but pulling through to defeat Olympic silver medallist Damir Martin and proceed to the quarter final.
Dara raced again on Monday in the repechages, but with only the first place in each rep preceding to the A-D semi-finals was unsuccessful and will gain valuable experience in the E-H finals and will seek to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics through either of the American Qualification Regatta or the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in 2020.
Upcoming Race Times
CUBC has two alumni in the blue riband event of the World Championships, the M8+, and both Henry and Pat will face off in the same heat at 1145. Two boats from each heat will qualify for the A-Final, with a repechage providing the final 2 places. Things only get more tense in the final, as only the top 5 crews will qualify for the 2020 Olympics. The final 2 places will be awarded in the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in 2020.
Tomorrow’s racing will focus on the quarter finals for the 1x, with both Dara and Natan racing.
