Second leg of Trans-Tasman begins this week
The second leg of the U21 Trans-Tasman Regatta is set to begin this week with Australia bidding to retain the Rusty Robertson Trophy. New Zealand currently lead Australia, 155 to 125 points ahead of the second leg of the regatta which takes place from 22 to 24 August on Lake Karapiro in New Zealand.
Before departing for New Zealand later this week, the team has been preparing at the Reinhold Batschi Men’s National Training Centre. Once again, the Australians will not only have the New Zealanders to race against on Lake Karapiro, with Rowing Canada sending the Canadian U21 Rowing Team to compete in the event. Racing runs from 22 to 24 August, and while the Canadians will not be eligible to receive points towards the Rusty Robertson Trophy, they can collect medals should they win races.
Rowing Australia Deputy Performance Director, Jaime Fernandez, admitted it was going to be a tough for the Australians to retain the trophy in 2019. “It’s been a very challenging lead in for the Australian U21s, we obviously had some illness and injury during the first leg of the regatta and now we’ve had a number of replacements come in for the originally named team.
“Hamish Harding has come in for Oscar McGuiness, while Taylor McCarthy-Smith has returned to the team. In addition to these two changes, Jack Barratt and Joseph Wilson, both from North Esk Rowing Club, have stepped into the sculling positions. The team has had a good preparation at the Reinhold Batschi Men’s National Training Centre in Canberra and are keen to get racing against New Zealand and Canada.”

Listed below is a breakdown of points, a link to the race schedule and a list of the two teams competing at the event. Sweep and Sculling groups will once again combine to form Eights for racing later in the week.

Points for racing will be awarded in the finals as follows:
- 1st – 6 points, 2nd – 4 points, 3rd – 2 points and 4th – 1 point for –W1x, M1x, W2- and M2-.
- 1st – 6 points and 2nd – 4 points for LW2x, LM2x, W4-, M4-, W4x, M4x, W8+ and M8+.
- 1st – 2 points and 2nd – 1 point for LW1x, LM1x and MixL2x.Medals will be awarded to the first-placed boat in each category.
