More A-Finals booked for Australia in Sarasota
U23 Women’s Double and U23 Men’s Eight into A-Finals; U23 Men’s Single into Semi-Finals
Australian rowers secured more A-Final berths overnight in Sarasota-Bradenton when the U23 Women’s Double Scull and U23 Men’s Eight both booked berths in Sunday’s A-Finals at the 2019 World Rowing U23 Championships. In addition to these results, the U23 Men’s Single Scull of Cormac Kennedy-Leverett won a place in Saturday’s semi-finals; while the U23 Women’s Pair and U23 Lightweight Women’s Single Scull will both contest B-Finals on Sunday.
Cormac Kennedy-Leverett opened proceedings for Australia on day three of the 2019 World Rowing U23 Championships with his quarter-final in the U23 Men’s Single Sculls. The Queenslander took on the Bahamas, Brazil, Romania, Greece and Spain in the race with the Australian crossing the line in third with a time of 6 minutes 51 seconds, enough to secure a semi-final berth for Saturday.
There were two repechages for Australia on Friday, the U23 Women’s Double Scull and the U23 Men’s Eight. The double of Giorgia Patten and Harriet Hudson won their repechage in a time of 6 minutes 56 seconds and proceed to the A-Final on Sunday where they’ll take on China, Hungary, Germany, Greece and Austria.
The U23 Men’s Eight finished second in their repechage, progressing with the repechage winners, Germany, to the A-Final. A composed sprint for the line from the Australians saw them up their rating to 44 in the final few hundred metres of the race to snatch the second A-Final berth from Canada by just 0.17 of a second. The Australians will take on the Netherlands, Great Britain, Romania, USA and of course, Germany, on Sunday.

In the two semi-finals of the day, Georgie Masters finished fifth in the U23 Lightweight Women’s Single Scull, while Tara Rigney and Dyone Bettega were fourth in their semi-final. Both crews will now contest B-Finals, the Pair on Saturday, the Lightweight Single on Sunday.
Saturday’s racing will see Australia contest four A-Finals, two semi-finals and one B-Final.
