Horrie aims to claim sixth World Championships title
Erik Horrie named for 2019 World Rowing Championships; Three-time Paralympian Kathryn Ross returns in the PR2 Single Scull; PR3 Squad named ahead of FISA International Para-Rowing Regatta
Rowing Australia today announced the group of para-rowing athletes to compete at various competitions throughout 2019.
Five-time World Champion, Erik Horrie, has been named in the PR1 Men’s Single Scull to compete at the FISA International Para-Rowing Regatta, World Rowing Cup 2 as well as the 2019 World Rowing Championships – the latter also being the qualification event for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Three-time Paralympian, Kathryn Ross, is set to make her return to the Australian Rowing Team in 2019, with the Canberra-based rower named in the PR2 Women’s Single Scull for 2019. Ross, a three-time World Champion in the PR2 Mixed Double Scull, will race in the single scull at the FISA International Para-Rowing Regatta in Gavirate in May, and then at the 2019 World Rowing Championships in the non-Paralympic boat class.
The selectors have made the decision to name a PR3 squad ahead of the Gavirate regatta, with further trialling to take place at a PR3 training camp between 22 and 28 April. This trialling will see a PR3 Mixed Four selected for the Gavirate Regatta, along with PR3 Men’s and Women’s Pairs for the May event. The PR3 crews will be reviewed post Gavirate based on performance before the Team for the World Rowing Championships is confirmed
The PR3 group includes 2018 World Championships silver medallists James Talbot and Jed Altschwager, along with 2018 Australian Rowing Team members Ben Gibson, Nikki Ayers, Alex Vuillermin and coxswain, Renae Domaschenz. In addition, 2016 Paralympian, Davina Lefroy makes a return to the PR3 category, and joined by South Australian William Smith and Victorian Alexandra Viney.
“We’ve elected to name a PR3 group ahead of making a final selection for the Gavirate International Para-Rowing Regatta and World Rowing Championships. This, in part, reflects the depth of talent we have in the group – that warrants further trialling – and also provides greater opportunity for us to review and select the best possible crews for Australia,” said Head Para-rowing Coach Gordon Marcks.
“We are pleased to welcome Kathryn Ross back into the Australian Rowing Team after a three-year hiatus and are looking forward to seeing Erik Horrie continue on his extraordinary journey in the PR1 Men’s Single Scull.”
The PR3 crews and coaches will be named in due course.
