At Memphis Rox, Jarmond Johnson Was a Source of Light for Everyone Who Knew Him
Every January, we share a tribute to members of our community who we lost last year. Some were legends, others were pillars of their community, all were climbers. Read the full tribute to Climbers We Lost in 2025 here.
Jarmond N. Johnson, 25, June 29
Jarmond Johnson was born on October 5, 1999, in Mississippi and raised in South Memphis, where he grew into a pillar of his community and a source of light for everyone who knew him. His life, though far too short, was defined by kindness, adventure, and an unwavering commitment to lifting others up.
Jarmond served as the Outreach and Fundraising Coordinator for Memphis Rox, where he found his true calling: creating a space where everyone felt welcome. He had a remarkable gift for making people feel like they belong, regardless of their background. Through his work, he opened the doors of climbing and community to countless young people from South Memphis, helping them make positive choices and discover their own potential.
An avid and passionate climber, Jarmond explored some of the most iconic climbing destinations in the world. He bouldered in Joe’s Valley, Utah and Stone Fort, Tennessee; sport climbed in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah and Red Rock, Nevada; and ice climbed in Munising, Michigan. His greatest personal milestone came when he summited Mt. Kenya—an achievement that filled him with pride and reflected his determination and adventurous spirit.
Those who knew Jarmond remember him as funny, kind, and fiercely protective of the people he loved. Even in the face of his own hardships, he brought joy and comfort to those around him. His presence made rooms brighter, burdens lighter, and communities stronger.
Tragically, Jarmond’s life was cut short by gun violence on June 29, 2025, during a personal altercation. He leaves behind a legacy of inclusion, compassion, and resilience that will continue to live on in the many lives he touched. His son is expected to be born this December, and his spirit will undoubtedly be carried forward through him.
Jarmond will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. His influence endures in the community he helped build, the people he inspired, and the love he gave so freely.
We love you, Mon.
