Deal of the Week: Save $85 on Metolius Recon Crashpad

0 4

Thrashing your way up a narrow trail as your pad catches on every tree and branch is a surefire way to turn what would otherwise be a Type I fun day into a miserable schlep. But who wants to sacrifice safety once you’re on the bloc for a more enjoyable carry? The tri-fold design of the Metolius Recon solves the problem.

“The ingenious Metolius Recon solves the carry vs. coverage dilemma with a pad that opens to 42” x 60” x 4” and folds to 42” x 22” x 13”,” wrote tester James Lucas several years ago when he reviewed the Recon. He also loved the big external pocket for storing essentials, the cush shoulder straps, and the dual handles on each side.

Based out of Oregon, Metolius has been making crashpads since the `90s. In a guide to bouldering gear, we dubbed this pad “a honker, stonker” (interpret as you please). Testers also praised the four inches of foam that kept their knees and ankles happy. We also included the Recon as one of our dozen favorite crashpads out there.

Currently, this “ingenious” pad is 25% off at the REI Holiday Sale, launched on Friday, November 14. Normally clocking in at $349.95, the pad is now marked down to $262.39 for a savings of $87.56—a princely sum that could buy you two chalk bags, multiple seasons worth of chalk, or cover about a third (or more) of the cost of a new pair of bouldering shoes.

While the REI Holiday Sale ends on November 24, the Monday before Thanksgiving, there will surely be Black Friday sales days later. But will this crashpad deal revive during the annual banquet of savings that is Black Friday-Cyber Monday? Only time will tell.
