Robson Pass Hut Updates: Laying The Foundation & Beginning of Framing

Construction of the Robson Pass Hut is underway. Last week the construction team finished laying foundation for the hut, and they are now starting on the framing. Below are some images from the site, detailing the process so far. While we’re thrilled to see construction progress, fundraising is still ongoing – and we’d love your help to bring the project across the finish line!

The construction of the new Robson Pass Hut has reached an exciting milestone over the past few weeks, with some logistical hurdles cleared and foundation work underway. During three days of helicopter operations, all necessary materials for the project were moved to the site; the construction crew now has everything needed to bring this long-awaited project to life.

The construction team from Ennadai Woodworks of Golden, BC has established their base camp where the original horse camp used to be located and is doing their best to minimize their environmental impact on the area. All trees removed from the hut footprint and the construction process will be repurposed as firewood for the nearby BC Parks ranger cabin, which will reduce the need for service flights in the coming season.

The signs of progress are already visible, with BC Parks having installed new trail signage showing the distance to the future Robson Pass Hut. This official recognition marks a significant step forward for this project that has been years in the making.

Ground preparation has proven challenging, with the crew encountering numerous boulders scattered throughout the construction site. Despite these obstacles, the team has been methodically working through the difficult terrain, and will use all the excavated dirt to backfill holes once the foundation work is complete. Each structural column is undergoing rigorous quality control, including individual, detailed inspection by a structural engineer in Vancouver via video call.

The framing work on the hut began this week, with the team focusing on the first floor; second-floor framing is expected to be nearing completion in a week’s time. Work to prepare timbers and joinery used in the framing process is ongoing.

We will be sharing more updates on the construction progress in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Voices of Robson: Korey Caldwell

At The Alpine Club of Canada, the mountains are where our stories begin. As we build the new hut at Mount Robson, we’re sharing the voices that make this project possible.

The Voices of Robson storytelling series honours the members and families whose connections to these peaks inspire us all. One of these is Korey Caldwell, who reflects on time in the Rockies with her father, Byron Caldwell — an ACC member whose legacy will live on through the vision of the new Robson Hut. Without the generous support of the Caldwell family, this project wouldn’t be possible.

The Rocky Mountains. They’re the reason that dad and mom packed their bags and headed west after getting married. The reason that my sister and I got to live the truly privileged life that we did. The reason for many of our stories growing up. And, in the end, the mountains were also the reason he’s no longer with us. But somehow, that feels fitting too. Because if he had to go, there’s a quiet comfort in knowing he left this world doing what he loved most, following the call of the peaks that had called to him his whole life.

He had always been drawn to the mountains and while I never shared his passion for conquering the monoliths of the world, he was able to pass down his love for the Rockies. There are many fond memories that I have of us spending summers driving around BC. Exploring all the various campgrounds with our 1989 GMC van and tents.
Cooking our dinners on a small climbing stove, playing games by lantern light, getting rained out, and learning to truly enjoy the gift that we have all around us.

Even now, wherever I am in the world, the mountains and reflections of my father will always call me home.

Mount Robson wasn’t a mountain my dad and I spoke about often, but I’ve always known it held a special place in his heart. So much so that he chose to have it engraved on his wedding ring. That simple detail speaks volumes. Mount Robson is not an easy climb; it demands strength, determination, and respect; qualities that defined who my dad was. I can’t help but feel that, for him, reaching its summit would have been more than just a physical accomplishment. It would have been a deeply personal triumph. He found such joy in being above the clouds, in seeing the world from a perspective few ever do. In many ways, Mount Robson feels like a reflection of him. majestic, challenging, and awe-inspiring.

Stories like Korey’s remind us that the Rockies aren’t just mountains — they’re where memories are made, families grow closer, and dreams live on. The new hut at Mount Robson will stand as a tribute to this enduring connection. By contributing to the Voices of Robson campaign, you help keep these stories alive for generations to come.

Rab Canada sponsors the ACC hut network.
We thank them for their support.
