A New Hut at Mount Robson

Introducing the newest ACC hut in Mount Robson Provincial Park

The Alpine Club of Canada is thrilled to announce that we will be adding to our backcountry hut network with a new, state-of-the-art hut in Mount Robson Provincial Park. The hut has been more than two decades in the making and when complete will serve as a gateway to the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies and the surrounding area.

When complete, the hut will address a long-identified need for improved backcountry accommodations in this historic area. The new hut will be a safe, warm shelter in the remote wilderness of Mount Robson Park, welcoming adventurers in all seasons. Since the ACC’s first exploratory camp at Mount Robson in 1913, the area has remained a beloved spot for club members.

The hut represents a significant investment in supporting sustainable backcountry access while preserving the natural environment that makes this area so valuable to mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts. We are excited to move forward and bring this long-awaited vision to life!

Planned Location

The hut will be located at Robson Pass, 24km from the Mount Robson Provincial Park information centre, and about two kilometres from Berg Lake Campground.

For the Texqa’kallt people of the Secwépemc-Shuswap Nation, Mount Robson is known as Yexyexéscen (Yuh-hai-has-kun), which translates to The Mountain of the Spiral Road. This name comes from the distinct layers of shale and limestone on the mountain, which form a spiral-like pattern as they wind around its slopes. The Alpine Club of Canada acknowledges the land that holds all the first people’s histories, knowledge and stories of the mountainous areas we enjoy. We strive to honour this significant place, Yexyexéscen, through our respectful mountain practices and our responsible outdoor behaviours, and we strive to build our mountain cultures through sharing our stories.

Construction Details

The hut will sleep 12 people and include innovative design features and a new approach to ACC hut construction. The hut will be built as a two-story, hybrid timber-frame building, utilizing sustainable exterior materials. The sleeping area will be located on the first floor, while the kitchen and common area are on the second floor above. The design is intended to optimize temperature regulation and air flow in sleeping quarters. The second-floor common area will allow hut guests to enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Robson and the surrounding area. An entrance vestibule will provide an “airlock” like system to prevent cold air from entering the main common area and sleeping quarters. The cabin will include a deck wrapping around the West and South aspects of the second floor which will have exterior seating. Solar panels mounted to the roof of the cabin will provide energy for the hut’s electrical needs.

Contracted Builder

Ennadai Woodworks was selected as the contracted builder for this project. Ennadai is a manufacturing company based out of Golden, BC specializing in timber frame construction and primarily uses materials from local suppliers for its projects.

Construction Timing

Planning for a hut at Robson Pass initially began in 2002, but then was put on hold for several years. After resuming in the mid 2010’s, planning was further delayed by pandemic and flood damage to the park in 2022. After over 20 years, we are so excited to officially announce construction planning is well underway for the new ACC hut at Mount Robson – shovels will hit the ground in early summer 2025!

Mt Robson's Historical Significance

Mount Robson Provincial Park and Robson Pass have long held a special place in ACC’s history. The club’s General Mountaineering Camp has been held in the area on four occasions, and the club’s 1913 exploratory summer camp resulted in the first ascent of the mountain.

The ACC's commitment to climb Mount Robson and the story of the mountain's eventual first ascent would become one of the great tales of Canadian mountaineering.
