Dirtbag Love Story Contest

First comes climbing, then comes love.
Maybe it’s the unbridled trust you instill in your climbing partner. Or that butt shot POV you’re privy to while belaying. Or the Florence Nightingale effect when your spotter saves you from a bad fall. Been there? We want to hear about it.
The Dirtbag Love Essay Contest invites your stories about love and climbing. Turning climbing partners into life partners, asking your climbing guide out on a date, getting frisky on a portaledge—it’s all fair game.
The catch: Keep it short. We welcome funny, poignant, weird, raunchy, and platonic love themes alike. And you do not actually need to be a dirtbag to enter. We look forward to reading.
- Submit your entry using this Google form.
- Bonus points if you have a photo, video, and/or illustration to go with your story.
- Submissions open Wednesday, February 5 and close Friday, February 14 at 11:59pm Mountain Time.
- Keep your initial submission to 300 words or less. (Published stories will be edited, in collaboration with the writer, and may run slightly longer or shorter than the original submission.)
- We will select three winning stories, all of which will be published on Climbing.com. Prizes are as follows: $500 (first place), $250 (second place), $100 (third place).
- We may also publish runner-up stories. By submitting your story, you give Climbing permission to publish it.
- We’d especially like to hear from readers who identify as part of an underrepresented group.
- Please do not submit stories that have previously been published elsewhere.
- We will aim to respond to all submissions before announcing the winners, but our response time may vary depending on the volume of entries. There’s no need to follow up on your submission.
- Complete contest rules can be found here.
