Weekend Whipper: Gunning for Second Ascent of 5.12 Trad
Readers, please send your Weekend Whipper videos, information, and any lessons learned to Anthony Walsh, awalsh@outsideinc.com.
Isolation Motivation (E5 6b/5.12-), is an aptly named route Alex Riley did the first ascent of just after the primary Covid-19 lockdown. “I’d been training on a board and not doing much else,” Riley told Climbing, “so I was pretty strong and it’s possible that it might be a bit of a sandbag at the grade.”
In the video Joe Brindley is attempting the route’s second ascent. Riley says the lessons to take away are: “Place lots of good protection, give soft but careful catches on short routes, extend protection below roofs, and don’t take it too seriously when you fall off!”
Happy Friday, and be safe out there this weekend. Thanks to Alex Riley for the video.
