Entertainment!

We are so excited to switch up the format this year and offer a more interactive evening as well as provide more opportunity for our community to connect together. The afternoon will start with the patron presentation where they will share a story about their mountaineering journey. This will be followed by the Mountain Guides Pinning Ceremony. These events are open to all who are interested in the Patron’s story and who want to support our newest mountain guides.

The next part of the evening will kick off with our amazing community partners who will host games and share information about the great they are doing. The evening will continue with mini-presentations and fireside chats from members of our community to share stories and provide the opportunity to have meaningful conversations. Participation in the activities will give you a ticket to put in the draw for some big prizes to be draw later in the night. Food will be provided and drinks can be purchased (your ticket includes one drink ticket). The night will end with some boogying to a live band.
ACC - Sustainable Energy Systems at Huts

The ACC has a multi-year, multi-project plan to update power sources at ACC Huts to renewable energy systems.

The systems built will vary by location but will include solar with battery banks, wind and micro-hydro.

ACMG - Simon Parboosingh Assistance Fund

This fund serves as a vital resource for ACMG members, staff, and volunteers, offering financial assistance during personal crises. It was established in memory of Simon Parboosingh, an aspiring alpine guide who tragically lost his life in 1994. The fund aims to continue Simon’s legacy by supporting our community during challenging times.

2024 Patron - Sylvia Forest

Sylvia Forest, this year’s Patron of the Mountain Guide’s Ball, was born to become one of a rare breed. Part of a family of wilderness adventurers, she began her career as a backcountry explorer at a young age, and by her early twenties had gained experience on many big mountains, including Mt. Aoraki (Cook), Mt. Robson, Mt. Kenya, and Mt. Denali (McKinley). Sylvia has climbed a number of major peaks in Canada, including the first female ascent of the East Ridge of Mt. Logan, as well as in Africa and South America (including Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere).

Her skills, knowledge, and natural aptitude led her into a career in the warden service at a time when women were only beginning to make inroads into this demanding profession.

Her real passion was for guiding and rescue, and in 2001 she became the fifth woman in Canada to achieve her full Mountain Guide Certification. In this capacity, she worked extensively in the heli-ski industry, guide certification, teaching avalanche courses both locally and internationally, and leadership courses—especially courses for women. She served for eight years on the ACMG Board of Directors: two as Interior Director; two as Vice-President; and four years as the ACMG’s second woman President. In her career, Sylvia has guided in Antarctica, Mexico, and Svalbard, taught industry level avalanche courses in Japan and Sweden, and been instrumental in many rescues, often in hazardous conditions.

Sylvia has been a member of both the Alpine Club of Canada and the Calgary Mountain Club since 1976—48 years!—and was the first President of the CMC, back in (about) 1980. In addition to guiding many camps for the ACC, this summer will see her twenty-fifth year serving as a guide for the ACC‘s General Mountaineering Camp.

Sylvia’s love for the mountains did not restrict her to just mountaineering. She has broad interests, and has enjoyed rock climbing, caving, and canoeing, and has spent many years exploring the mountains and eastern slopes on horseback. She makes her home on a small hobby farm near Golden, B.C., where she and her husband keep dogs, horses—and bees!

Throughout her life, Sylvia has been a strong contributor to both the ACC and the ACMG, and for this and her many accomplishments, we are proud to honour her as patron of the 2024 Summit Shaker.

New: Pay It Forward Ticket. In addition to your own ticket, we’ve provided an option for our guests to buy an additional ticket for one of the ACC’s or ACMG’s awesome volunteers. If you have the means to do so, your PIF Ticket will go to a deserving person who has given exceptional time to one of our organizations this past year. Thanks!
