Weekend Whipper: If Only All Whippers Could Be This Clean
Readers, please send your Weekend Whipper videos, information, and any lessons learned to Anthony Walsh, awalsh@outsideinc.com.
No carnage this week, folks. (Sorry, not sorry.) Just a clean, airy whip on Church of Christ (5.12/26) at Nowra, Australia.
Martin Wolczyk had been projecting Church of Christ for several months and says he was getting pretty close, consistently popping off of the route’s “gnarly crux” just before a good resting hold.
“The scream you hear is not fear but frustration,” he told Climbing. “I’ve fallen here many times before. [But] the fall was super soft—falling-into-fluffy-clouds type of catch thanks to my belayer who is super experienced!”
A good belay can do wonders for the leader’s psyche. Buoyed with the confidence that he could safely try as hard as he could, Wolczyk sent next go.
Happy Friday, and be safe out there this weekend.
