New school geo is a definite improvement for making riding easier. Bigger tires and wheels increase grip and rollover. Longer bars increase turning leverage. Shorter chainstays makes manuals easier. Longer tt makes you less likely to go over the bars.

I think of it as a 30% performance increase downhill at the cost of %3 performance decrease climbing, which is a trade-off your average mountain biker is happy to make.

But I think there's an argument to be made that the joy of mountain biking is in the difficulty of the thing. And sure an enduro bike is challenging when you're a seasoned rider tearing down a rocky mountain but mostly people are just cruising butter smooth urban trails on super compliant bikes at which point, I'm like, bro, are you really mountain biking anymore?

So that's why I'm a hard tail and a rigid guy. I want to feel the trail. I want to get over obstacles with skills rather than suspension. And I think this sentiment is also partly what is driving the industry away from enduro and into gravel. The pendulum is swinging back.

But of course gravel isn't immune to ridiculous tech. Don't get me started on gravel droppesr and micro-suspension. Jesus Christ. Though the seasoned rider knows what's up. The bike doesn't matter. It's all about the skills, baby. I'd still smoke your ass on a Huffy. And I'll give knucks to any boss that shows up to the ride on a 90s nut buster.
