A Successful Weekend for British Judoka in Italy, France and Hungary

0 8

British judoka delivered a series of strong performances across Europe last weekend, competing at the Conegliano European Open in Italy, the Győr Cadet European Cup in Hungary, and the 18th Harnes International Tournament in France.

Conegliano European Open

Charlie Ayre (Tees Valley JC) produced an excellent performance in Italy to claim bronze in the -60kg category — his second medal of 2025.

So far this year, Ayre has taken gold at the Birmingham Junior European Cup, finished 5th at the Junior European Championships, and placed 7th at the Poznan Junior European Cup. This latest result marks his best performance so far at the senior level.

After fighting well through his opening rounds, the -60kg judoka reached the semi-final but narrowly missed out on a place in the final after conceding a yuko in golden score. It was an extremely close contest, but he responded brilliantly in the bronze medal match, producing a strong performance to finish his international season on a high.

Wesley Greenidge (Enfield JC) continued his fine form on the European circuit with a bronze medal in the +100kg category — his third podium finish of the year.

Greenidge has already picked up bronze medals at the Podgorica and Dubrovnik Senior European Cups, along with a 7th-place finish at the La Nucia European Open and 5th at the Sarajevo European Open.

It was a tough start to his day, with an early loss in the quarter-final to the eventual silver medallist in golden score. However, the +100kg judoka bounced back superbly, taking wins in the repechage and then the bronze medal contest, which he secured in under two minutes by ippon — a dominant way to end his day in Conegliano.

Also in the +100kg category, Daniel Ede (Westcroft JC) finished 5th, just missing out on a spot on the podium.

This equals Ede’s best result of the year in what has been a strong and consistent season. He has already earned a bronze medal at the Birmingham Junior European Cup, finished 5th at the Portimao Junior European Cup, and placed 7th in Sarajevo. This weekend’s performance further shows his growing strength and potential in the division.

Gyor Cadet European Cup 2025

James Leroux had an excellent day in Győr in the -55kg category, competing in just his second Cadet European Cup, where he narrowly missed out on a medal to finish 5th.

He was unfortunate to face the eventual gold medallist in his opening contest, which dropped him into the repechage rounds. There, he showed great resilience for a young judoka still gaining experience on the European circuit, battling through three repechage contests to earn his place in the final block.

These events provide invaluable experience for young judoka to learn and develop, and James certainly did that, coming away with a strong performance and an excellent result.

18th Harnes International Tournament

It was a successful weekend for a large England Judo cadet squad that travelled to France to compete at the 18th Harnes International Tournament.

In the -44kg category, Tamilla Abdullaeva claimed gold, while Katrina Davis took bronze and Mahnoor Mirza finished 5th.

In the -57kg division, Maisie Shattock won silver, and Evie Mitchell added another bronze to the tally.

Louie Seguin placed 5th in the -46kg category, while Samuel Knights also finished 5th in the -50kg division.

In the -55kg category, Ishmael Brown placed 7th.

Rounding off the results in the -73kg category, Luka Abashidze won silver, Stanley Sherlock finished 5th, and Finley Waugh placed 7th.

Congratulations to everyone who competed this weekend!
