43 British Judo fighters set for Malaga European Open

This weekend sees the European Tour head to Spain for the Malaga European Open.

European and World Championship medallists will compete alongside Tokyo Olympians and most recently Paris Grand Slam medallists as over 400 judoka set to compete, 43 of which will be representing GB Judo.

Dubrovnik European Cup gold medallists Alexander Short (-66kg), Jamal Petgrave (-90kg) and Acelya Toprak (-57kg) will all be in action this weekend, looking to build on their impressive recent form.

A fighter who is in the form of her life is Emma Reid. Competing in the -78kg category, Reid has medalled in all but one of her competitions this year. The Zagreb Grand Prix bronze medallist is joined by the fighter she defeated in the bronze medal match in Dubrovnik last week, Rachel Tytler.

Malin Wilson, who claimed silver behind Toprak in Dubrovnik will also compete alongside 2019 World Championship representative Lele Nairne and former European Junior Championship bronze medallist Bekky Livesey.

Tatum Keen has shown great form since returning to the mat in August. The Junior fighter picked up her first international senior medal last week in Dubrovnik, claiming silver. Keen is joined by 2021 Junior World and European Championship teammate Sian Bobrowska in the -52kg category.

Amy Platten (-48kg), Max Gregory (-100kg) and Dylan Munro (-60kg) are also in action following their bronze medals at the Dubrovnik European Cup last weekend.

Daniel Powell competes in the -73kg category alongside Eric Ham. Powell recently won silver at the Sarajevo European Open whilst Harry Lovell-Hewitt claimed bronze. Lovell-Hewitt competes in the -100kg category alongside Gregory.

This weekend also sees referee Stefan Newbury under assessment for his IJF-A referee examination.
