CARRYING THE CROWN: POWELL RIVER KINGS SEEK NEXT OWNERSHIP GROUP
POWELL RIVER, B.C. — The Powell River Kings of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) are entering a defining moment in the franchise’s history.
After more than three decades as a fixture of junior hockey on the Sunshine Coast, the Kings have officially launched a public search for new ownership. The process is being led by Cosmos Sports & Entertainment, Canada’s leading sports marketing firm specializing in franchise sales and sports investment strategy.
Perched between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Mountains, Powell River offers something few markets in junior hockey can, a true destination community. With its waterfront views, outdoor lifestyle, and deep civic pride, Powell River is a place where leaders are visible, community impact is tangible, and sports organizations matter. In a town where relationships drive business, owning the Kings is not just an investment in a team, it is an opportunity to become part of the heartbeat of the region.
Now, the opportunity exists for a new ownership group to shape the franchise’s next era.
“This is a rare opportunity to acquire a BCHL franchise in a market that genuinely cares about its team,” said Cary Kaplan, President of Cosmos Sports. “The Kings have history, brand equity, and a passionate fan base. With strong leadership and proper investment, there is significant potential to strengthen operations, grow partnerships, and build long-term stability.”
“When we brought this team to Powell River back in 1988, the vision was simple, give this community something it could rally around and be proud of,” said Joe Mastrodonato, recognized for his contributions as a builder of the franchise. “For more than three decades, the Kings have meant so much to so many families. Now it’s time for the next group of leaders to step forward, bring fresh energy, resources, and with strong leadership, Powell River has the potential to become the premier Franchise within the British Columbia Hockey League.”
The upcoming season marks a significant turning point. New ownership would have the opportunity not only to preserve junior hockey in Powell River, but to re-energize it and reinforce the Kings’ position within one of Canada’s premier Junior A leagues.
Cosmos Sports & Entertainment is inviting expressions of interest from qualified individuals, business leaders, community ownership groups, and investment partners who recognize both the responsibility and the opportunities associated with owning a historic franchise.
