Three Teen Hockey Players Killed in Car Crash in Canada
The Canadian hockey community is mourning the loss of three teenage players who were killed in a car crash while on their way to practice Monday.
Southern Alberta Mustangs players JJ Wright, Cameron Casorso, and Caden Fine were in a vehicle traveling on Highway 2 near the town of Stavely, Alberta Monday morning when they collided with a gravel truck, said CTV News Calgary. The 40-year-old gravel truck driver suffered minor injuries and received treatment, but sadly the three teens were all pronounced dead at the scene.
Casorso, a goaltender, and Wright, a forward, were both 18-year-olds from Kamloops, British Columbia. Fine, 17, was a forward from Birmingham, Alabama who had gone up to Canada to pursue his hockey career.
'No words' to express grief, team says
The Southern Alberta Mustangs confirmed the passing of all three young men in a Facebook post Monday evening.
“It is with unimaginable heartbreak that we confirm three players from the Southern Alberta Mustangs were killed in a motor vehicle accident earlier today while traveling to team practice,” the team wrote. "“There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief. These young men were more than hockey players — they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home.
"Our hearts are with the families, friends, billet families, teammates, coaches, and everyone who loved them. We ask that their families be given privacy and compassion as they navigate this devastating loss."
The Mustangs are based in Stavely and are currently competing in their first season in the US Premier Hockey League’s Premier Division.
A memorial for Casorso, Fine and Wright has been set up at Stavely Arena, and the Calgary Flames held a moment of silence for the trio prior to last night's game.
GoFundMe has been launched
A self-described family friend of the Mustangs has started a GoFundMe for the families of the three fallen players. As of today, the initiative has raised over $19,000.
"On February 2nd, 2026, three members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs, a Junior A hockey team in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL), died tragically in a motor vehicle collision," the fundraiser's page reads.
"On behalf of the coaches and owner, we want to help lift the financial burden of travel, funeral costs, and day to day expenses of the players families from Canada and the United States.
"To the teammates, coaches, families, billet families, friends, owner, we mourn with you and are thinking about you during this difficult time."
