Rangers upend Kraken in OT, move to 6-1-1 on road

Will Cuylle scored the game-winning goal at 2:42 of overtime as the New York Rangers defeated the host Seattle Kraken 3-2 on Saturday night.

Cuylle added an assist and Vladislav Gavrikov and Noah Laba scored in regulation for the Rangers, who went 3-1-0 on their Western trip to improve to 6-1-1 on the road. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin made just 11 saves as New York outshot the Kraken 27-13.

Chandler Stephenson had a goal and an assist and Brandon Montour also tallied for the Kraken, who extended their points streak to four games (2-0-2). Joey Daccord stopped 24 of 27 shots.

The winner came as J.T. Miller, who scored in Thursday's 4-3 overtime victory at Edmonton, skated down the center of the ice and fed Cuylle for a wrist shot from just inside the right faceoff dot, beating a prone Daccord as he tried to scramble from side to side.

The Rangers opened the scoring at 10:16 of the first period. Adam Fox floated a shot toward the net from the left point and Gavrikov redirected it past a screened Daccord.

The Kraken tied it on the power play at 12:49 of the period, working the puck around the top of the offensive zone to Stephenson for a wrist shot from just outside the left faceoff dot that found the far upper corner of the net.

The Rangers regained the lead a minute later, picking up a loose puck at center ice to create a 3-on-2 rush. Daccord stopped Cuylle's shot from the left faceoff circle but Laba chipped the rebound over the prone goalie.

The Kraken evened the score at 6:59 of the second on Montour's slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that beat Shesterkin high to the glove side.

Seattle forward Kaapo Kakko, a former Ranger, made his season debut after breaking a hand in an exhibition game Sept. 24. Kakko started on the Kraken's third line but finished it on the first with Matty Beniers and Jordan Eberle, a trio Seattle used frequently last season.
