A Rare >70 km Ride
I don't particularly enjoy long bike rides. At some point I get a pinched nerve in my upper back and it stops being fun. I've gone for precisely three bike rides that were greater than 100km long and I felt that pinch all three times.
The sweet spot for me is 50-60 km. So when I map out a long ride, I try not to exceed 60km. But yesterday, I went on a rather rare >70 km Toronto bike ride.
Larry Klopot visited last week for an emotional but beautiful episode about the loss of his son Alex and his decision to journal the grieving process. If you haven't heard this episode yet, it's #1735 in your playbook. If you know anyone who has lost a child, I believe Larry's podcast will help them realize they are not alone.
As a guest of Toronto Mike'd who visited the TMDS studio, Palma Pasta wanted to give him a complimentary frozen lasagna. Palma Pasta lasagnas are legendary, but I only had meat lasagnas in my freezer (this was my bad), and Larry needed a vegetable lasagna. So I made a special order for Larry and biked the lasagna to North York. This destination ride took me through beautiful Wilket Creek Recreational Trail and it was pretty awesome.
On my way southwest, I found myself on the Bloor bike lane at around 7pm, and I knew the Toronto Maple Leafs were playing at 7:30pm. I chatted up Leafs manager Rob Butler, mainly about the recent GM resignation controversy and his comments about Ayami Sato, then settled in for a highly entertaining Leafs win over the London Majors.
By the time I arrived home, I had ridden 73.03 km, my longest ride of the year.
