You Can't Get There From Here

Yesterday, Dr. Cliff Redford dropped by to kick out the jams. That's what we call it when a Toronto Mike'd guest returns to play and discuss their favourite ten songs of all-time. One of Dr. Cliff's songs was from Billy Idol, a singer I just loved in the mid-80s.

I was thinking about how I came to love Billy Idol, and realized it was a progression. The first music I really loved was "golden oldies" songs from the '50s and '60s. Then, on the radio, I'd hear Stray Cats and because I was so into early rock from the 1950s, I naturally gravitated towards rockabilly.

So there I am, enjoying Top 40 radio and Stray Cats hits from Built For Speed, when I stretch out and get into Duran Duran and yes, Billy Idol. Billy Idol was that harder punkier sound that appealed to young me. But it was a progression.

And from Billy Idol you can move to Sex Pistols and The Clash.

But you can't get there from here.
