Topeka ice hockey team name chosen
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka's new professional ice hockey team has an official name this week.
Topeka Pro Hockey announced at 1 p.m. on May 5 at the Stormont Vail Events Center that the new team's name will be the Topeka Scarecrows. The new team's logo, jersey and other information was also released during the announcement ceremony.
The Topeka Scarecrows join the roster of other teams that make up the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL). The team's head coach and first player were also revealed during the announcement.
"Topeka we are planning on having a fast, tough hockey team, we will not be pushed around," said Topeka Scarecrows Head Coach Robbie Nichols. "I'm very familiar with the FPHL, owning a team, coaching a team, playing in a game in a league. We know what it takes to win."
Topekans were given the chance to weigh in on the name for the new ice hockey team from April 14 to April 27 by voting online. The five possible choices included the following:
- The Topeka Scarecrows.
- The Topeka Tornados.
- The Topeka Wizards.
- The Topeka Roadrunners.
- The Topeka Capitals.
The Stormont Vail Events Center hosted ice hockey games in late January and early February earlier this year. Locals packed the inside of the events center to watch the games which were played by teams donning the temporary names and brands of past Topeka hockey teams.
