Stayin’ Alive in Dominant Fashion

The Prince George Spruce Kings dominated the final period in a 6-1 win over the Surrey Eagles on Sunday afternoon to move within three points of Langley for the final playoff spot in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference.

After a scoreless opening period, Cooper Williams got the Spruce Kings on the board at 5:08 finishing off a 2 on 1 with Aidan Carolan after Corson Maguire cleared the defensive zone to Carolan.

The Spruce Kings thought they took a 2-0 lead on a Kazumo Sasaki breakaway, but the replay was inconclusive on whether the puck crossed the line and it remained 1-0.

Late in the frame, Carter Hesselgrave scored his 6th of the season off a face-off win from Owen Goodbrand, firing it past Aidan Fischer. Shots were even 20-20 after 2.

On the first shift of the third period, Will Moore put one off the post and the Eagles went the other way and Gavin Rocha hit a rolling slap shot past Charles Gravel to make it 2-1.

The Spruce Kings responded at 6:17 as Nicolas Papineau finished his 11th of the season on a breakaway to make it 3-1.

Prince George extended their lead to 4-1 at 12:06 as Ryan Wachtel went in and beat Fischer with a wrist shot as Zachary Hachey and Ludvig Basth picked up the assists.

Brock Cummings got his 17th of the season at 17:42 on the power play with a howitzer under the bar from Hesselgrave and Sasaki.

Williams got his second of the night at 18:15 as he buried a rebound from a Carolan shot, with Maguire picking up the second assist as the line had a 6-point night.

Charles Gravel went 2-0-0-1 on the weekend with a 1.89 Goals Against Average and .943 Save percentage.

Prince George returns to Kopar Memorial Arena on Saturday March 29th against Powell River at 6:00 pm. All eyes will be on the Langley/Coquitlam Express game on Friday night as the Rivermen cannot get more than 1 point on the weekend.
