Q&A: The Vipers’ Push for the Playoffs Amid a Strategic Rebuild

0 4

Vernon, BC:

Q: The trade deadline has passed, and some key moves were made. How do you see the team’s strategy in this transition period?

A: We don’t see this as a typical rebuild. While we did part ways with a couple of veterans, we’ve managed to maintain a strong veteran presence in the lineup. At the same time, we’ve brought in young, talented, and highly competitive players who will not only contribute now but also shape the future of the team. We believe that even with these changes, we’ve positioned ourselves well for the final playoff push as we head into the last stretch of the regular season.

Q: You made several acquisitions at the deadline. Can you break down what each player brings to the team?

A: Absolutely. We’re excited about the additions to our roster and how they can contribute:

  • Grimes (Price) – A young but experienced defenseman in his second junior year. He’s already had a few games with us and has shown he can make a positive impact. He’s a well-rounded defender with a good first pass, poise, and strong hockey sense.
  • Revenig (Eddie) – Gained valuable experience with last year’s playoff run in Fargo. He’s agile, highly competitive, and plays with great attention to detail. He’s someone we can rely on in any situation.
  • Munroe (Michael) – A young player with a strong competitive edge. When he’s engaged physically, he’s at his best. He has good offensive instincts and the ability to produce, which we hope to see flourish in a Vipers jersey.
  • Watt (Ryan) – A veteran player with great feedback from multiple sources. He’s a team-first guy who will be invaluable during our playoff push. He can contribute in multiple areas on the ice and provide leadership off the ice, which is key as we integrate our new players.
  • Kallay (Finn) – A young player with a high ceiling. We believe he has the potential to thrive in Vernon with more opportunity. He plays a mature game for his age and will add depth to our offense.
  • Johnston (Eric) – With nearly 250 junior hockey games under his belt, his experience will be crucial in settling our defensive core. Some of our younger or European players are still adjusting to the North American style, and Eric will provide stability and leadership in any situation.

Q: Now that the roster is finalized, what’s the mindset of the group heading into the homestretch?

A: The most important thing for us right now is getting this group on the same page as quickly as possible. We only have two practices before our first game against Blackfalds, so while we’ll introduce some structure and systems, the real focus will be on mindset and expectations.

At this point, every game must be treated like a playoff game. There’s no more room for missteps. We need to embrace the mentality that we are playing for each other and for the fans who have supported us through a challenging season. Our goal is clear, and we have to commit to it fully.

Q: What is the ultimate goal for this team and the coaching staff as you push forward?

A: The immediate goal is to get everyone aligned as fast as possible and give Vipers fans the chance to experience playoff hockey in Vernon again this season. While player development and helping our guys reach their long-term goals remain a priority, we are now in the business of collecting points. Every single player needs to bring their best for the team. This is about fighting for a playoff spot, and we believe we have what it takes to get there.
