Leaders in the Locker Room

Zane Rowan and Ian Engel wear the “C’s” on their jerseys for the Bismarck Bobcats this season. However, being a captain is much more than a patch on the jersey. Not only in what it takes to be one, but also in what it means for Rowan and Engel to have that honor.

“It’s obviously something I don’t take for granted, and try to do my best at every day to lead these guys in the right direction. I think a lot of it comes down to small details. Leading by example, doing the small things that add up to bigger things at the end of the day, and just being there for the guys whenever they need it, hockey related or just being a good outlet for the guys.” Engel said. “It means everything, these guys have been amazing to me since I came in. Having that kind of confidence from my teammates and from the coaches as well and the community, it’s been amazing and this has been an amazing journey so far this year for me, so it means the world.” Rowan added.

Engel has been with the Bobcats for three full seasons, but has been a part of four in total, playing one game in the 2021-22 season prior to joining the team for his first full season in 2022-23. He’s nearing his 150th career game with the Bobcats and he takes pride in seeing this group have success on the ice. “It’s [Bismarck] obviously a really good program over the years. Lots of success here, lots of advancements of players, and also those players at the next level being really successful and making a good career for themselves. It’s definitely something that I knew was coming and could see it, but it’s really good for our younger guys like Snyder and Sypniewski to step into a big role here, have some points, and play the right brand of hockey when we need it down the stretch.”

Rowan on the other hand is a first year Bobcat. He brings a lot of experience from playing the last three years in the WHL with the Regina Pats, where he played with NHL level talent such as Ryker Evans of the Seattle Kraken and Connor Bedard, the former #1 overall pick of the Chicago Blackhawks. He reflected on how his experiences throughout junior hockey have helped him step into this role with the Bobcats. “Playing everywhere has brought me different experiences and bringing those lessons learned to different teams has helped me out a lot. This whole sport is a learning game, so being able to bring those experiences to the younger guys has been huge for me”

Both Rowan and Engel, along with forwards Kyle Doll, Evan Hunter, and Wyatt Sypniewski will be representing the Bobcats and the Central Division at the Top Prospects Tournament in the coming weeks. They both mentioned the importance of the opportunity not only to their personal development, but also to show the rest of the league the skill the Bobcats bring to the ice. “It’s definitely an honor, and something I’m excited about. To play in front of some scouts, and represent the Bobcats really well and the Central Division, while hopefully winning two games.” Engel said. “We’ve had a standard since the start of the year. That standard is getting rewarded right now, and that starts with Coach Roth and goes all the way down to us. It’s an honor and a privilege to represent our team in that and I’m sure the other guys would say the same and Roth as well. We’re just honored to be able to experience that.” Rowan added.

It’s safe to say the Bobcats are in good hands with Rowan and Engel leading this group.
