Lehigh Valley Phantoms vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
October 1, 2024 – Preseason Game #1

TONIGHT – The Phantoms are officially BACK as they open the preseason tonight against the rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at PPL Center. Lehigh Valley swept the Penguins in the opening round of the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs. The last time these teams met, Jacob Gaucher scored the winning goal in overtime to finish the series in one of the greatest moments in PPL Center history. Tonight is also the first preseason game for the entire AHL.

ROSTER – 32 players are on the roster to open the preseason including a mix of returning favorites, newcomers, and tryout players from the Reading Royals. View the Phantoms roster for tonight’s game here:

MOVING UP – Several players who had arrived for Phantoms Training Camp on Sunday have since returned to the Philadelphia Flyers to join the big club for their final preseason games. Yesterday it was Sawyer Boulton, Brendan Furry and Rhett Gardner who departed Lehigh Valley camp to play in yesterday’s game at the New York Islanders. Furry scored a goal on a redirect of an Emil Andrae shot. Tonight’s call ups include Elliot Desnoyers and Jacob Gaucher who will play for Philadelphia this evening at the Boston Bruins.

HE LOOKS FAMILIAR – Kirk McDonald is the new head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2024-25. The 40-year-old bench boss was previously an assistant coach and head coach of the ECHL Reading Royals for seven seasons from 2014-2022 and made regular appearances at PPL Center where he was familiar with many of the players. McDonald spent the last two seasons coaching the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL.

COMING UP – The preseason continues this Saturday night with the defending Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears invading PPL Center. Lehigh Valley concludes the preseason on Sunday, October 6 at 3:05 with a rematch exhibition tilt on the road at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
