That Greg Keelor 1972 Summit Series Story with Bobby Orr and Frank Mahovlich

0 13

FOTM Jeff Marek first blew my mind with the 1972 Summit Series story surrounding Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo fame. When Greg Keelor was 18-years old, and trying out for the Toronto Marlboros at Maple Leaf Gardens during the 1972 Summit Series. Bobby Orr was injured, but he and Frank Mahavolich were practicing at the gardens when they needed a goaltender, and Greg Keelor just happeneed to be there and in full gear.

As an 18-year-old phenom goalie, Greg Keelor did indeed take shots from Bobby Orr and Frank Mahovlich during a practice session at Maple Leaf Gardens during the 1972 Summit Series. When we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series a couple of years ago, this story picked up some steam and was shared in the Toronto Sun by FOTM Lance Hornby.

On Saturday night at Massey Hall, when FOTM Ron MacLean inducted Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he shared this story. It was clear by the reaction of the crowd that this story was not well known. But it should be. It's one heckuva mind blow and a very fun fact.
