No One Cares About My Professional Life Story

The title of this blog entry is a direct quote from Richard Deitsch. Richard wrote for Sports Illustrated from 1997 until 2018 and now writes for The Athletic. You might know him best for his stink on The Fan 590 as co-host of Prime Time Sports with Bob McCown.

Off and on over the years, I'd invite Richard to visit for an episode of Toronto Mike'd. I think it would be an interesting conversation, not only about his many years at SI, but the fact he's an American who moved to Canada for a job on radio and when that radio job evaporated, he decided to stay here and raise his family in the great white north.

As the host of Toronto Mike'd for 12 years, with well over 1500 episodes under my belt, I can work with a great deal less than that. I won't even need my extra gear to make Richard's story interesting.

Earlier today, when Richard publicly tweeted at FOTM Matt Cauz about coming on TSN Radio, I replied that after he makes his TSN Radio debut, he can make his Toronto Mike'd debut. That resulted in the tweet that inspired the title above.

No one cares about my professional life story. I'm boring.

This, my friends, is my absolute least favourite excuse for not appearing on Toronto Mike'd. Here are excuses I'd far prefer:

  • I don't like Toronto Mike'd and I don't want to be a part of it.
  • I remember your feud with Bob McCown and I want to remain loyal to him.
  • I don't want to travel to South Etobicoke.

Saying no because you're "boring" suggests you think your years at Sports Illustrated, The Athletic and The Fan 590 would make for a boring story, and that I, as host, would be unable to mold an entertaining conversation from such a base. I'm calling bullshit.

Saying no is fine, just don't tell me it's because professional life story is boring. Nobody's buying that.
