The India men’s hockey team will look to book their berth and assure themselves of a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday (August 6) when they take on Germany in semifinal match. India are one of the most successful hockey teams in the world, winning eight gold medals in their glory years between 1928 and 1980.
Their opponents Germany are no slouch either, having won four Olympic gold medals, three World Cups and nine Champions Trophy titles. India ended a 41-year medal drought at the Tokyo Olympics 2021, bringing home a bronze medal. But on Tuesday, they would like to improve on that and go for gold at Paris.
A semifinal win will ensure a silver for India, which they last won in the 1960 Rome Games. The Indians led by skipper Harmanpreet Singh and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh displayed a tenacious performance against Britain in the quarterfinal at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on Sunday.
Playing with 10 men for close to 40 minutes after Amit Rohidas was shown a red card for unintentionally hitting rival forward Will Calnan on his face, the Harmanpreet Singh-led side defended stoutly to hold Britain 1-1 in regulation time and force a shoot-out, where it emerged 4-2 winner. India will miss the services of Rohidas after the FIH confirmed that the hockey player will miss the semifinal after copping a red card in the quarterfinals.
It means India will have 15 members to choose the side instead of 16 for the semifinal against the Germans. Veteran Sreejesh, playing his last international tournament, seemed to have saved his best for the last as he made save after save, including two in the shoot-out, to seal India’s second consecutive Olympic semifinal spot.
Historically, the odds are not in favour of India as Germany have won 53 matches out of 106 between the two sides and the Indians have won just 26 with 27 games ending in draws. However, India have had the upper hand in the last 5 matches – winning 4 of them and losing just 1.
In the Olympics, the head-to-head record is neck-and-neck between the two sides with India winning 5 matches, Germany winning 4 and three ties ending in draws.
“When I stepped on this field today (Sunday), there were two options for me. This can be my last match, or I got an opportunity for two more matches and I think, yeah, I got two more matches now,” Sreejesh said after the quarterfinal win over Great Britain.
“See, whoever comes in the semis, we (will) just play our game. That’s it, that’s important, because now it’s a different game, because we are one man down and we need to focus on that now.”
Germany, who beat Argentina 3-2 in the quarterfinal, are familiar opponents for India in high-stakes tournaments, the most famous being the bronze medal match in Tokyo where India registered a thrilling 5-4 win, thanks a stunning last-second save by Sreejesh.
India’s most recent clash against Germany were in the FIH Pro League’s London leg in June this year, where they defeated the Honamas 3-0 before losing 2-3 in the return tie. In the other semifinal, Netherlands will quare off against Spain.
India will be up against Germany in the semifinal of Men’s Hockey.
