TEAM GB keeper Ollie Payne was warned by officials after using an iPad in a shootout defeat to India.

The Olympic hockey quarter-final finished 1-1 despite the Indians playing much of the match with 10 men after Will Calnan was struck in the face.

And during the shootout, eagle-eyed viewers spotted Payne’s cheeky attempt to clue up on his opponents.

One fan tweeted: “Bit of controversy brewing – India not happy that GB keeper Ollie Payne is consulting an iPad between penalties.

“The Pickford water bottle to new extremes.”

With England leading 2-1 in the shootout, a Team GB coach was summoned and handed Payne’s notes.

BBC commentator  Andrew Moon said: “The GB team manager is just jogging down to the baseline.

“He’s being told he’s not allowed the iPad.

“Players are allowed notes. We have seen notebooks in the past.”

At Euro 2024, England keeper Jordan Pickford’s penalty heroics were aided by a shootout cheat sheet on his water bottle.

The Everton star, saved from Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji as the Three Lions sealed a 5-3 win on penalties after drawing 1-1 in 120 minutes.

But Payne could not emulate Pickford’s performance as India scored all five of their attempts.

PR Sreejesh was the hero as he saved two penalties from Conor Williamson and Phillip Roper after a stellar display in the game.

GB hockey gold medallist Kate Richardson-Walsh praised India on the BBC’s coverage.

She said: “Sreejesh has proven why he is the world’s best goalkeeper.

“He was outstanding for his side today. He earned them their place in the semi-final.

“I think, had it been 11 players on 11 players, it would have been a really open game.

“I think we would have seen both teams going at each other with more chances and space.

“Craig Fulton deserves a lot of credit because, after the red card, he went and set them up in a really excellent, tight manner.”
