Weekend Recap is presented by Iris Optometry

It was a defeat in the final minute for the Kings on last Satuday, but now the battle shifted to Powell River as the Kings took on the Chiefs for two more games.

As you would expect it would be another great start for the Kings Friday night with Anthony Yu scoring the opening goal at 12:58 which was his 7th of the season. Chilliwack would tie it up late in the period on a power play after patiently waiting for right moment to strike. Mateo Mrsic buried the one timer at 18:39 to even the score one a piece.

It would take long for the Kings to regain their one goal advantage in the second period. On a power play of their own Jace Harder would send a hard cross ice pass to Adam Mendelson and from one knee was able to get the puck past Austin McNicholas for his 5th of the year. It would be a back and forth period the rest of the way but the Kings would get another offensive opportunity late. A Zander Stewart point shot would deflect on its way to the goal in would land in front for Kailus Green who put it between the legs of McNicholas for his second, as the Kings took a 3-1 lead heading to the third.

After maybe a not so great first 40 minutes for the Chiefs the would come out hot to start the third with a good opening shift. They would get rewarded 1:09 in when Brady Millburn went hard to the next and the puck just nicked him on the way in to make it a one goal Kings lead. Shortly after Henryk Lasky would thrown a massive hit for Chiefs forward Caleb Elfering that would cause a commotion. Christian Maro and Elfering would drop the gloves, then after they finished Owen Thomas and Jack Sparkes went toe to toe in a heavyweight tilt. Once the dust settled it was back to the game. At the end of it all it would be the Chiefs who would gain momentum after the fisticuffs. They would tie the game at 12:48 after a shot from Nathan Morin was stopped by Owen Crudale but snuck through him and caused a mad scramble in the crease and Matt Argentina would just sneak it over the goal line at 12:46. Now with momentum full on their side it would take long for Argentina to score his second of the period as he put his team up with 4 minutes left. Now the Kings had a great opportunity late on a 6 on 4 power play. They will get a few looks but Nate Morin would score a shorthanded empty net goal to seal a 5-3 win for the Chiefs.

On Saturday, the Chiefs looked to sweep this little 3 games series while the Kings looked to salvage it and get back into the win column.

It would be another fiery start for the Kings who outshot Chilliwack 4-0 early but it would be the Chiefs who lit the lamp first at 9:02 on their first shot of the game off a bang bang play from a faceoff that Nathan Morin finished off. However the lead wouldn’t last long. Just about 5 minutes later in a 4 on 4 scenario Asher Wites would start the play up ice from his own zone and pass to Anthony Yu who would return the puck to Wites inside the blueline and he would cut to the right and shoot it over the glove of McNicholas for his first BCHL goal at 14:45 to send the game tied at one heading to the second.

The Chiefs would strike first once again in the second this time 2:17 in when Brady Millburn set up Austin Peters with a cross ice feed to make it 2-1. Afterwards the Kings would take control the remainder of the first half of the period. They were outshooting the Chiefs 21-14 at one point in the period but couldn’t beat McNicholas. After the media timeout Chilliwack took back control and dominated the rest of the period. They would add one more on a power play at 15:16 to make it 3-1 heading to the third. Chilliwack outshot the Chiefs 17-10 in the second.

The Kings looked to return the favour Saturday night after the Chiefs came back from 3-1 down Friday. It would be a slow start to the first half the the Kings would wake up and start to push later in the third. They would find themselves on a few powerplays late including another 6 on 4 but a few posts and a big pad save by McNicholas kept it a two goal lead for the Chiefs. The visitors would eventually add an empty netter to secure a 4-1 victory. The final shots were 31-30 for Chilliwack while the Kings went 0 for 6 on the power play and 1 for 10 on the weekend.

The King now have dropped 8 consecutive games and wrap up November with a 4-15-2 record this season. They will kick off the December schedule at home when they host the Cranbrook Bucks for the first time ever on Friday, then it is Teddy Bear Toss night on Saturday against the Capitals which will be the final home game before the holiday break.
